New Trailer for Black Panther
The new trailer for Black Panther dropped yesterday and people are freaking out! That's because it was freaking amazing. Watch the trailer for yourself.
What makes this movie unique is the fact that it stars a cast that is almost entirely black. Charlie and I have talked a lot on our podcast about the importance for movies to cast characters that make sense for where the movie takes place. This movie takes place in Wakanda (A fictional Country in Africa in the Marvel Universe.) But something we haven't mentioned much, is the importance of having writers and directors that represent the characters in the story. That's why it was so awesome when Patty Jenkins was picked to direct Wonder Woman. The writers of Black Panther are both black. They've also both done incredible things. Ryan Coolger, the writer and director, previously wrote and directed Fruitvale Station and Creed, two of the better movies made in the last five years. The other writer, Joe Robert Cole, was a producer of American Crime Story.
Something else that excites me is the number of female roles in this movie. When you look at the Marvel movies, women almost always play the love interests and very few of them play important roles at all. Yes, we have Black Widow and Wanda, but lets not pretend either of them get main story lines. The Marvel movies are great, but they are very male heavy. In this trailer, every other scene is a woman advising the King of Wakanda. They aren't just love interests, they are his family and friends and they are badass. It is clear that he respects these women a great deal. He listens to them, goes to them for advice and has them fight along side him.
The same things that make this trailer awesome are what will make the movie awesome. Everything mentioned above, plus the incredible actors in these roles. Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Phylicia Rashad, Sterling K. Brown and Daniel Kaluuya to name just a few. Seriously, that is only a few of the amazing actors in this movie. The list is so long.
Black Panther will be released in theaters February 9, 2018 and it can't come soon enough.
