New Trailer for 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' Isn't Jumanji, but Maybe Fun
The new trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle dropped earlier today. The expensive cast of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian and Jack Black is the main draw of this movie and will probably get a decent amount of ticket sales based on their faces being on the poster.
The second reason this will make instant money is that it is a sequel? spinoff? reboot? of the original Jumanji starring Robin Williams. However, saying that it has anything to do with the original besides having the same name would be... a lie.
Four teenagers are sent unsupervised to their high school's basement by their principal (yup, that's what happens). In this basement they find a very old video game system and a compatible, working TV, score! They all have their various cliche teenager personalities and get sucked into this magical video game after starting it into a magical jungle with giant animals and probably some sort of quest.
OK, so I'm conflicted about this one.
Although the set up is stupid and everything looks cheesy, I genuinely like the idea. Sucked into a video game and they have to fight their way out. I LOVE when actors have to play the opposite of their personality. The Rock is weak and nerdy kid. Jack Black is playing a hot, popular girl and so on and so on. Also, the movie has a pretty good comedic director in Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard, Bad Teacher, Freaks and Geeks) and a decent action-comedy writer as well, Chris McKenna (Lego Batman, 10 episodes of Community, Spider-Man: Homecoming).
The problem is this... why Jumanji?
It's such an obvious money grab to get former fans of a decent kids movie to buy tickets. Not unlike Paul Feig's Ghostbusters, they could have just taken this cast, director and writer and made a great original movie with basically the same exact story. Call it something else, damnit!
However, if you can get past that, this could be actually funny, and potentially for the whole family.
