2017 — Best Summer for Movie Releases Ever!

2017 — Best Summer for Movie Releases Ever!

As Charlie once said, “Art gets really good when life gets really shitty.”

What does that have to do with 2017 summer movies? Well, in case you didn’t notice, things got pretty awful in 2016. Regardless of your political opinions, this last year’s election was full of tension, anger and hate. There wasn’t a lot of fun posts on Facebook about vacations or celebrations. Instead most of us posted articles of the terrible things that politicians did or said. Posts which then became huge debates often with elementary school level argument tactics.  But I digress.

After a really rough year like 2016, we all deserved something to be happy about and Hollywood delivered. I’ve listed the top 5 movies of the summer below, please take a look at their Rotten Tomatoes Scores! (I’ll wait...) Do you know how rare it is for movies to get above 90% on rotten tomatoes anymore? Charlie and I have spent a lot of time on our podcast talking about how much harsher critics have been on movies in recent years. This summer is an awesome summer and it isn’t just the critics who think so. The lowest audience score was 87%, which is still excellent!

If you are wondering if these movies are really worth the scores they got, I can assure you they are.

I’ve see all of them. In recent years I’ve been disappointed by the lack of fun movies and comedies. I would say that all 5 of the movies are fun and funny. For a while it seemed like superhero movies were the only fun movies left. But 3 of the top 5 were unique non-superhero stories. There is something for everyone, so if you don’t like rom coms, you can skip The Big Sick and watch War for the Planet of the Apes or Baby Driver.

I’m sure there have been good summer movies in the past, but were those summers 5 movies above 90% good? I don’t know, and I’m not going to do the research. The point is, if you haven’t been to the theater much this summer there is still time to see these awesome movies. What are you waiting for?

Wonder Woman (June 2nd)
Rotten Tomatoes: 92%

Baby Driver (June 28th)
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th)
Rotten Tomatoes: 92%

The Big Sick (July 14th)
Rotten Tomatoes: 98%

War for Planet of the Apes (July 14th)
Rotten Tomatoes: 94%
